CHAIN YOUR SCOOTER! SCOOTER MUGGINGS IN ATLANTA

Seems like some parts of Atlanta are more like a war zone these days where Scooter muggings are quite common. I've heard of people getting mugged for a scooter in the third world before, but never in Atlanta. A bunch of kids just walked up to someone at a stop and instead of a car-jacking it was a scooter-jacking!

All over Google News we have reports of Scooter thefts on the rise. Make sure to keep your scooter safe,
http://www.cbsatlanta.com/story/15171158/scooter-thieves-caught-on-camera
Since July 18, cops say five scooters have been stolen and one hijacked. Thieves stole the scooters either from the driveways of homes or apartment parking lots. In some cases, the scooters were chained, police say.
Police say a rider was traveling around 10 p.m. Wednesday when five people ages 17 to 21 forced the rider off the bike and stole it.

at MRP we sell alarms, locks, covers, always something good to keep your scooter safe.

ITALY is still the most important market for scooters in the world.

Following up on my last post, it seems that year on year many brands have left the Italian market only to be replaced by unknown Chinese brands. Sadly, many of these have been the higher quality Taiwanese brands which have left the market such as TGB, ETON, etc...

Europe is a complicated market to analyze.

The shakeup continues in Italy for 2011 since many of the incentives to buy under 125cc units have expired. Companies such as Malaguti have shut down all assembly having over 6,000 units in warehouses unable to sell them to the dealers who are saturated with stock.

New emerging mainland brands have come in such as Garelli ( made by several Chinese OEMs such as Rhom or Zongshen ) we've also seen CF MOTO have some success with private label brands such as ITALKIT, but under the CF MOTO name you only see a handful of registrations less than 30, but under private label they've had more success. This leads me to believe that Chinese and several Taiwanese companies have just not been able to market their brand to the Italians. Special consideration should be taken when looking at brands like Benelli that continued to be sold despite the company being sold to QJ during the years 2005-2007 registrations could have been older pre-QJ production but there is no way of knowing since in Italy VIN years are not important, but one thing is obvious the company has done worse since being taken over and is basically now an export brand for QJ which despite its better price point has lost sales and market position in Italy.

Companies with much better marketing like Garelli have taken over. From TV commercials to sleek ads have helped them capture sales despite them being made in Asia.

They are even sold in Supermarkets - see my report here:

Each market needs to have the proper marketing so despite having a good product PGO seems unable to sell even more than 50 scooters a year between 2002 - 2010, but in the USA under the Genuine marketing it became its best market in the world. Same applies to SYM which in France sells well as does TGB because both markets have different marketing and importers. Meanwhile in Italy the marketing has been handled totally differently. TGB even at one point had a subsidiary in Italy run by a Taiwanese manager and he was unable to increase sales to the point where it had to close down.

Private label brands like QJ are hard to analyze because of the amount of names they sell under. In the USA alone before the crisis hit they had over 9 importers from GMI, DIAMO, Xtreeme, Andretti - Powersports Factory - Benelli, Keeway, VENTO, etc..... the same applies to Europe. QJ companies have brands that don't exist anywhere outside of select markets such as GENERIC. This is a top selling brand in Germany distributed side by side with DAELIM and TGB. Despite the fact DAELIM and TGB have basically left the Italian market.

Only Honda, Piaggio, and Yamaha seem to dominate every European market with Suzuki coming in a close third or fourth in each county. In some countries like Spain the sales crisis has hit even harder with entire companies leaving such as CF MOTO, yet CF MOTO continues to sell to importers in Germany, Greece and the private labels in Italy.

The best markets to look at are Italy, Germany, and Spain. They reflect everything that is good and bad about the Powersports Industry. Spain shows you how bad it can get, Italy what brands have to do to be a success, and Germany how quickly a country can come back from the abyss where sales are strong again compared to the other markets.

I can't post current data without getting in trouble, but someone asked me why I say KYMCO is the best. It's simple when looking at the data of brands from 2002 to 2010 I can say year on year KYMCO has gone from the top 20 in each market to the top 10. In Italy its number 3 or 4 in all the scooter categories.

One thing to consider are Go Kart and Buggy registrations. When analyzing Taiwanese companies like ADLY, PGO, ETON that make ATVs or Buggies you notice how few scooters they sell in Europe, but off-road seems to be their main market. PGO sells in Germany and Italy several hundred Go Karts, but hardly any scooters between 2005-2010. Same applies to ADLY, but sadly ATVs are not required to be registered in most countries so its difficult to analyze. It is possible Eton, ADLY, Hartford have more sales, but its impossible to see since they might be under private label names. One bright spot, CPI is back in European markets and seems to be doing well in France again.

Taiwan Sales are up Kymco continues to lead the market

My good friend Quincy Liang just reported Taiwanese production sales. Kymco continues to lead the pack with sales of 30,000 pieces above SYM and over 34,000 pieces more than Yamaha its two closest competitors in Taiwan.

Combined sales of the other local manufacturers / distributors Honda, PGO (*Genuine in the USA), CPI, Piaggio - Vespa, have sold less than 3,000 pieces all year. According to data compiled by the Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC)  just goes to show as Kymco continues to dominate some of biggest markets world-wide including Italy where it has passed Yamaha and all European brands except for Piaggio in the scooter sales category.

There are obviously some well known names missing from the list for several reasons. Several Taiwanese Brands do not sell locally such as Eton, ADLY, TGB these brands are only for the export markets. Some companies are export oriented with the majority of production going to select key markets such as CPI and sales to France / Germany or PGO whose biggest market worldwide for scooters is the USA. CPI has just recently come back into North America with sales to PIT MOTORS in New Jersey. Companies such as Hartford are relatively new with small local sales and keen on finding new importers. Eton has focused mostly on expanding into the solar and electric powered vehicles the last few years with fewer exports to South and North America.

More well established brands such as ADLY Moto have stopped focusing on the competitive scooter field and focused on ATV exports. Previously imported into the USA by ADLY USA the company moved its line to Hammerhead USA and have focused on selling ATVS and new designs.

SYM is supposedly getting re-organized with Alliance ( formerly Lance a ZNEN distributor ) we are still waiting to see how the re-organization from the Carter Bros fallout continues. Kymco USA is now a wholly owned subsidiary of the factory in Taiwan and according to everything we have seen have maintained the US management and not changed any terms on its dealer base. If sales in Taiwan and Italy are any indicator KYMCO is basically a major player now worldwide. Considering its maintained its market share in the states while other companies folded i'ts a good indicator of where sales are headed.

MRP does sell a ton of upgrades and racing parts for KYMCO. We do offer some OEM parts since they sell engines to several buggy companies and to Malaguti which we have the parts for so if you need of these please make sure to contact us http://www.mrp-speed.com

Turbo Kit offers a full range of performance scooter exhausts for Chinese 50cc to the Kymco or Piaggio 500cc

TK exhausts from Spain offers a wide selection of mufflers for all your performance needs.

From the ever popular Exhaust for the Honda Ruckus - Zoomer, Yamaha Tmax, to all the Chinese 50cc and 150cc.

The funny thing is in the states most brands dont have a true performance exhaust that has been dyno tuned or tested for a Chinese scooter. TK does! They don't just buy a crappy piece of aluminum and put a V8 logo on it and say its an exhaust, they test, race, and make sure even their retro 50 to 150cc Chinese exhaust works.

Motorcycle Industry still on downward trend but SCOOTERS are up!

So the Motorcycle Industry Council released its updated numbers this week. Overall the Motorcycle Industry is still in the toilet for much of the modern world. From Italy to Spain the numbers sound like they were added up by the Greek Economic minister, one bright spot. Scooters are selling all over the world. Even in the United States we have the first upward signs since 2008 so that's good news.

We have new dealers applying here at MRP. I hear the Rhino and UTV sales are down, but people cannot stop buying scooters. This is exactly the rebounded we needed. Gas prices are also silently coming back up. Nobody is really talking about it in the press, but for the last few weeks gas has been around $3.70 all over Miami. To me that means gas is $4. It's the new normal. Nobody is freaking out about it, they just justify filling up the SUV some other way.

Now these numbers don't include side by sides, but I know those numbers are down as well.

So scooters are up overall and we know that the number is higher that 5% simply because 90% of the Chinese companies don't report to anyone. So for every Vespa or Honda that reports you know 4 SUNL and Jonways are selling.

The MIC posts numbers on a quarterly basis. The data applies only to 19 reporting manufacturers: Aprilia, Arctic Cat, BMW, Buell, Can-Am, Ducati, Harley-Davidson, Honda, Husaberg, Kawasaki, KTM, Moto Guzzi, Piaggio, Polaris, Suzuki, Triumph, Vespa, Victory and Yamaha.

Here at MRP we feel 2011 has turned into the year of the recovery. Things have stabalized, we are going to see a much better 2012, but this was a recovery year. New dealers are opening, the economy is slowly coming back, and many new dealers are taking the place of the ones that closed.

Now if the new dealers would stock parts and accessories instead of sending consumers to buy everything online the store churn and closure rate might it just might stabilize. One bad statistic the lifespan of the average scooter store has continued to go down from 5 years to under 4. Yes, we hear a lot about the new "local" Genuine or Kymco franchise, but the real test is how long they stay in business. We feel this number needs to go back up for a real recovery to happen.

The linear tracks of the sliding weights are the decisive feature in this variator system.

For the cost of a small waterfront Condo in Miami Moto-Morini was sold at auction

For the cost of a small waterfront Condo in Miami Moto-Morini was sold at auction

For one million nine hundred thousand euros about $2.8 million dollars.  Two Milanese entrepreneurs, Sandro Capotosti, former chairman of Banca Profilo, and Ruggeromassimo Jannuzzelli, former vice president and group Camuzzi. The two are at the head of the new company 'Eagle Bike', created for the occasion. If the court awards them the company it will be the first time I see an Italian brand sell for the cost of a small waterfront condo in Miami.

It's a sad day when Miami foreclosures are worth as much as entire Motorcycle companies. Just saying.....

Let's all thank Silvio Berlusconi for this sad state of events....
