US Scooter Industry still in need of consolidation

I haven't written too many articles lately and the truth is there are few places left to submit them to. We are down to three real magazines in the business Dealer News, Powersports Business, and Motorcycle Product News. Besides the occasional yearly article on gas prices and how the industry is doing great, there is no in depth reporting or coverage. More than once I'm the guy that told a dealer their supplier closed.

Wait what happened to CPI? Exactly.

Still it's an industry that is constantly evolving. We've had several spikes of high interest from investors, angel investors, and people wanting to get in on the action.

I salute the girls at GoGo for what they did on Shark Tank and it brought the spotlight back to this industry. Still there is a huge need for more consolidation.

Too many Chinese companies doing the exact same thing. Too many US importers doing the exact same thing.

Email me your thoughts, facebook us. More to follow.

Tates Comics a good example of building a destination

It's that time of the year again where gas prices are going up, new investors, car dealers, and small companies are looking at selling scooters and want to know how they can sell bikes.

For inspiration my suggestion is to visit a local shop that has succeeded in building a sense of community. This is no easy task, but it starts from the very beginning on how you set up the operation. I've blogged on many occasions on how to build a successful store from having free BBQ's, to rides, to having videos playing movies in the corner. Here in South Florida one store "Tate's Comics" has bucked the trend of comic shops that are constantly opening and closing. Nationwide its been a retail segment in decline that faces many of the same challenges a "niche" market like scooters face and that's the comic book industry.

Comic Shops just like motorcycle stores have faced threats from all sides including internet price sellers, Ebay, convention sellers, fly by night guys that sell at the same prices as the Monopoly called Diamond Distributors sells at, and even auction companies unloading the goods from closed stores. if  A good example that has succeeded where others have failed in Florida is Tate's Comics!

Just like the scooter industry a lot of people opened up shops in the 90's and in the mid-2000's when there was easy credit, financing, and an industry that was booming. The same number of shops closed during this period and actual in-store sales changed from just comics to collectibles, Japanese magna, and even further divided into gaming. To survive you have to adapt (first law of Arrakis) You have a classic MBA study case right here at a local shop that has not only expanded, but become a national award winning location. Tate's Comics to me is an inspiration for any small business owner of family run business.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fJStPrth6gU

Now not everyone is going to have a Vespa franchise where they hand you a manual and tell you what to do, how to do it, and when to do it. So if you have a small mom and pop scooter shop its not hard to find inspiration from local shops. Last week we posted about Ikea on the blog and got several emails, this week we are showing a South Florida landmark and a business owner who is an inspiration to many people. Every time I visit I see Tate's family, father, wife, and his crew. One reason they are so good at what they do is that they built a place where you want to hang out. Its not a corporate monster or a local shop that isn't well accessorized. It is the ultimate community location and has become a place that is no longer just a shop "its a destination!"

So inspiration comes in many forms, but this shop should serve as a reminder on how to survive in any market. If you become more than just a place where to buy goods, you become a legend.

The Dream of Scooters are Alive in Miami

Miami is a great place to ride a scooter. We have year round weather, over 10 rental shops in South Florida offer everything from 50cc to 250cc units for long term rentals. There's even word the local Rent a Motorcycle location will be adding Maxi 500cc units for all those tourists that want to fly in to MIA and drive to Key West on a rental scooter. I certainly know more than one Italian friend that would like to rent a 600cc if available for a month in the summer if the service was ready.

We have amazing locations and below are some of the reviews we've done.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aWn7Ib9lD74

The Scooter Maven visits the brand new Coral Gables museum and shows us some of the cooler sights in Miami, Florida. One of the best things about Coral Gables is that when it comes to transportation the city embraces different forms of travel. From its free Trolley operating all week long, to bicycles, and scooters there is a modern vibe to the city. It's different from the rest of Miami in the sense that you can get around on a bike or scooter safely and there's lots to do.

Where to get ideas? Go to Ikea.....seriously - INNOVATION IS THE KEY

My mission is to not just sell stuff. Even stuff we don't need, or don't even know we want.

It's to help people stay in business.

The Scooter Maven can help sell things you might not want, nor want to display, but the idea is to build a better store. To build the experience of what it means to be in a scooter store.

A great guy that can comment on that is Ingvar Kamprad the founder of Ikea. See the video below:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CIx9BlPX0Qo

In America anyone with twenty grand can open a scooter shop. So it you have different levels of merchandising, business, and selling backgrounds. You have to help everyone achieve their best level of business and sometimes help them just stay in business before its too late.

Between 2008-2010 we saw almost 400 stores close. Many of them will never come back. Some of the owners called me when it was already too late to help them. I always have the same advice, go hang out with an expert. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KLLl-jDj5Dg&feature=plcp&context=C47c6e83VDvjVQa1PpcFMefU_uPe6hIp0-K6RQSFX5vRX4xVEBpkI%3D

When I worked at Coca Cola they always wanted the consumer to know they were there the moment you turned into the isle. Every can was to be properly displayed and no corner should be lost for a possible point of purchase. The scooter store is the exact same thing. What are you selling? Why are you there?

Is it fun? To save gas? To save money? put up a sign that says these things because the consumer might not know. PUT UP SIGNS! SAVE GAS! HAVE FUN! SAVE MONEY!

Tell them what you do, Tell them what you sell, Tell them what they want.

As a salesperson over the course of ten years I have heard every possible reason from a shop owner as to why they don't stock parts or accessories. The thing is to run a better shop you don't need the Scooter Maven to give you advice, the best advice you could ever get is to walk into the store of the worldwide experts. Do you want to know about product layout go to Walmart, they maximize every square inch of the floor.
Right now there are computers running walking patterns on consumers eyes and foot traffic experts analyzing data.

Would you like to know why stocking accessories is important? Go to Ikea. The Swedes have re-invented the art of keeping you trapped inside the shop. While you attempt to get out of the maze they created, they have accessories for the accessories.

When a shop owner tells me they dont like to have oil, more than one helpmet or even roller weights, or extra mirrors. I ask myself two questions, one is the store a hobby? Seriously, is it a serious business person on the other line?
Second how much research have they done.

My favorite comeback is "You don't know the people around here." Fill in the blank. They are "rich snobs" "poor" "dont link spending money" "just want transportation from point A to point B" etc....

The truth is consumers by nature need to be told sometimes what they want. If I dont see a bluetooth helmet in the shop, I might never know it exists.

The client will go to Walmart to buy his oil if you dont stock it. The client will buy his helmet online at a shop that is faster, smarter, and cheaper than you. That is the truth.

Its true at the distributor level and its true at the store level.

So ask yourself is this is a store or a hobby ? To save $500 because you have the wrong accessories is just to loose $1,000. To save $500 because you have no accessories on the shelf could mean you loose the business.

So before you buy those accessories talk to the experts. http://www.mrp-speed.com

Good Article in Motorcyclist from the Motorcycle Show

Good article, doesn't really do a good job of talking about the US market ( being that only SYM, Kymco, Eton, PGO are the units exported to the USA now ) and that everything else is China made. It also doesn't mention why certain brands are not in the USA ( but they did go to the factories like TGB )but overall a very good article for the newbie looking at scooters or wondering what is the difference between Taiwan and China made units.

Please email us with any questions.

MRP was the first US parts company to drop ship starting in 2007 - See below. Our original program had 3,000 part numbers. We now have over 17,000 more than any other program in the USA.

Stores need a partner and thats where MRP comes in. In this new age of sales you need a distributor that doesnt take sales from you by selling directly to the customer we need distributors that go back to the traditional distribution mode helping the small business and sending clients to the store, but it gets better we want you the small shop owner to make money online. It doesnt matter if its raining or snowing outside you can make money 24/7. No matter what your local economy is doing you can sell MRP parts all day, all night, on Amazon.com, Ebay, on your site. Work from home on rainy weekends and you can make money with MRP. What we need are dealers that offer good tech support, are willing to put in the time, and understand selling parts. Every year for the past seven years Ive watched stores open and close in the winter, dont be one of those stores that doesnt prepare for the slow season. Invest in online sales and over the phone sales. Do you have a store zine?
A newsletter?
Maybe an in-store customer catalog?
Let us be your partner. MRP will send you business and drop ship to your customers if you are an active MRP dealer. Again, theres always a reason why youre busy, but this is an investment in your future. DONT LET THE LOCAL SCOOTER SHOP CLOSE. Benefit from a partner that sends business to the local dealer and doesnt sell consumer direct.
So if its snowing outside you can still sell MRP parts all day long.
Also, if you havent activated your account or ordered from us in a long time then dont wait to be inactive to call us or visit us at www.MRP-SPEED.com. We will set up your new user name and password for the new website.

dealer expo credibility gets shredded

dealer expo credibility gets shredded

Guys,

Thank you for the kind words, look I wish the show the best, I do. I want the industry to grow, but as a small business owner who sells to many small business owners Im tired of what this industry has done to itself. Be it the biggest distributors selling retail or undercutting the dealers. We need to help our base not kill them.

Small Business Owner Advice from the Scooter Maven the DJ at the Crepe Maker

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xHYHQEP7gZI

My friend another small business much like MRP, asked me how she could help bring people into the store. Yesterday I started my volunteering as the new DJ in the window at the Crepe Maker in Coral Gables Florida.

So I thought this would be a great chance to help a friend plus a good story for the small business blog http://martinracingperformance.blogspot.com/
This is much like selling scooters, you need the pink scooter in the window. How do you get your clients attention when there are 1,000 food choices on the street. Lights! Music! Fun!

As a small business scooter shops have to do whatever it takes to bring in cashflow.

I eat dinner at the Crepe Maker at least once a week, but how does the average passerby know how good the food is? They don't! You have to tell them, show them, give out samples, and make it the coolest corner on the strip.

What brings in a crowd? Sometimes its a good spokesperson, model, or some young girls. 88% of the walks ins to scooter stores are guys. Women are a growing segment, but it never hurts to have ladies to hand out flyers or do co-marketing with another local business.

So if you have a plastic surgeon around the block from his office, have him put some of his work on display at your motorcycle store. It will get attention.

"House Arrest" Great Ad

Here's an Italian company thinking out of the box. Seriously, great way to get noticed without breaking the piggy bank. Using the Warlock was a great idea.

Now if we could just get some Vespa ads like this they might stand a chance.
