Tates Comics a good example of building a destination

It's that time of the year again where gas prices are going up, new investors, car dealers, and small companies are looking at selling scooters and want to know how they can sell bikes.

For inspiration my suggestion is to visit a local shop that has succeeded in building a sense of community. This is no easy task, but it starts from the very beginning on how you set up the operation. I've blogged on many occasions on how to build a successful store from having free BBQ's, to rides, to having videos playing movies in the corner. Here in South Florida one store "Tate's Comics" has bucked the trend of comic shops that are constantly opening and closing. Nationwide its been a retail segment in decline that faces many of the same challenges a "niche" market like scooters face and that's the comic book industry.

Comic Shops just like motorcycle stores have faced threats from all sides including internet price sellers, Ebay, convention sellers, fly by night guys that sell at the same prices as the Monopoly called Diamond Distributors sells at, and even auction companies unloading the goods from closed stores. if  A good example that has succeeded where others have failed in Florida is Tate's Comics!

Just like the scooter industry a lot of people opened up shops in the 90's and in the mid-2000's when there was easy credit, financing, and an industry that was booming. The same number of shops closed during this period and actual in-store sales changed from just comics to collectibles, Japanese magna, and even further divided into gaming. To survive you have to adapt (first law of Arrakis) You have a classic MBA study case right here at a local shop that has not only expanded, but become a national award winning location. Tate's Comics to me is an inspiration for any small business owner of family run business.

Now not everyone is going to have a Vespa franchise where they hand you a manual and tell you what to do, how to do it, and when to do it. So if you have a small mom and pop scooter shop its not hard to find inspiration from local shops. Last week we posted about Ikea on the blog and got several emails, this week we are showing a South Florida landmark and a business owner who is an inspiration to many people. Every time I visit I see Tate's family, father, wife, and his crew. One reason they are so good at what they do is that they built a place where you want to hang out. Its not a corporate monster or a local shop that isn't well accessorized. It is the ultimate community location and has become a place that is no longer just a shop "its a destination!"

So inspiration comes in many forms, but this shop should serve as a reminder on how to survive in any market. If you become more than just a place where to buy goods, you become a legend.
