Slow Scooters are not the way to run from the cops

Just some advice for potential scooter criminals. Do not use a slow stock Ruckus.

Note to thieves: scooters are slow
Chico PD officer nabs alleged scooter thief who attempted to flee

An alleged scooter thief was arrested Friday (Nov. 2) after leading police on a chase reaching speeds of up to 25 miles per hour, according to a Chico police press release.

The rider of a 2009 Honda Ruckus scooter refused to stop when Officer Peter Durfee attempted to pull him over near the intersection of West Second Avenue and North Cedar Street at about 6:30 p.m. Durfee pursued the scooter until it disappeared into an almond orchard at the north end of Warner Street.

The scooter was found abandoned in another orchard on West Eighth Avenue near muddy footprints leading north. Ronald Louis Zausch, Jr., 29, of Chico, was detained nearby and identified by Durfee. He was arrested on charges of evading an officer and vehicle theft.

For all other law abiding citizens, please consider buying an MRP upgrade kit, Scooter Ninja variator, Naraku gears, the TK Exhaust made in Spain and get your Honda Ruckus going 50mph without having to swap the engine to a GY6. In any case NEVER EVER Run from the cops.

Industry starts pledging funds, relief efforts Nor'easter Support Effort from MRP.

Industry starts pledging funds, relief efforts Nor'easter Support Effort from MRP.

I was reminded yesterday I'm a part of a larger community. Here at MRP we have always made an effort to give what we can to the community. Not just our community in Miami, but to the larger community out there we are a part of. It's great to see the Powersports Industry coming together to help out. I have to say it's great all over the news you see Stores helping out. Even big companies like Budweiser are sending water in cans for those affected. Now this snowstorm hitting today has only made it worse.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oohLnnmj-iA

So the scooter community, and the community of South Florida will be helping in this effort. It might not be much, but our goal today is to send out a box of shirts and jackets to help out with the effort.

We've also read online about the Honda and Yamaha dealers helping out lending generators and selling them at half price. We salute the efforts of the Powersports Industry and these stores that despite the tragedy and bad economy are making an effort to help.

To read more about the powersports industry efforts click here:

When the economy was good we donated scooters to the Ronald McDonald foundation back in 2001-2003, we volunteered to help after Hurricane Katrina with the Coca Cola Scholars Foundation, we have even raised money and clothing for the earthquake in Haiti. Many of the scooter rallies we have supported over the years have had themes to raise money for charities as well so we do what we can.

The US economy hasn't been that great the last four years, but we still have jackets, shirts, and clothing that were returned for warranty or exchanged that are brand new that we can send out. Two days ago I dropped off a pile of clothing for the New Jersey effort and today we will be sending older 2010 and 2011 marketing shirts which never got purchased, brand new clothing to help people stay warm. I woke up this morning to the news of a woman who had lost all her clothing and I just couldn't believe this was happening in the USA. It reminded me of South Florida after hurricane Andrew.

China Motorcycle Factories 2013 for the US Market

I get this question a lot from new investors and people looking to open a motorcycle importing business into the USA. What is the next step for Motorcycle OEMS in China?

As the Chinese OEMs start to consolidate the real deal will come from setting up factory owned distribution centers in the USA or buying established importers.

It makes sense for a Taiwanese factory to own say Kymco, but what made it special is that it has the best management from the USA that money can buy. You can see the difference between the way Kymco did it and several others who have failed by putting in Chinese US boses. They don't know the culture.

They don't understand the financing issues. Most of them don't understand the consequences of not properly investing in parts before sales. This will change as the Chinese mature.

They have the money to do it and the factories just not the willpower. Next comes the US importer wanting again to be the next big Private Label company. Let's put it this way. The biggest US private label importer will never ever do the volume a private label importer in Belgium can do. So we are a nation of big egos in a small industry. Your value to that Chinese factory is purely one of bragging rights. The volume you buy is of no consequence. This usually comes from the fact that small stores and importers think they know the industry. Leading to my question why Sir do you think you know the industry better than all the leading industry veterans that I know? Then I get a couple of my favorite responses.

"Oh I buy stuff in China all the time"
"I've been to the Canton Fair"
"I imported a few containers of Chinese ATVs etc"

It might be easy to think you can become the next BIG Private label ATV, UTV, or Scooter brand but the truth is 90% of the people that try this have failed. Meaning their operations last less than 6 years. Yes, a better rate than opening a restaurant but still an volatile industry nonetheless. So before engaging in importing a new brand. I would hire some experts who know a thing or two and see where current Chinese OEMs are going wrong.

 1. Financing is Essential. Even CF Moto doesn't have GE right now if your small Scooter private label Znen importer doesn't have commercial financing it will never sell any volume of real consequence.

 2. Warranties should never be an issue. If you don't have parts before bikes or have a third party logisitcs company behind you then you will fail. I spend half my day looking for parts for importers who don't have proper parts departments. We make a living being a third party solutions company, we drop ship for small importers all the time. I always say why are you spending so much doing this? A proper solution would be to not have a warehouse for parts, outsource to us or just do it right. By not investing the proper amount in parts, employees, and a warehouse it will fail. By not investing the proper amount in third parties like MRP it will fail. You have to commit to one or the other companies that do it half way cannot grow.

 3. Branding. Why does your Chinese private label brand stand out? Selling on price is only for Chinese subsidiaries now. Why are US investors trying to fight China on price? You cannot fight them on the price of goods yet time and time again this is what we try to do. Build a brand!

 4. The Product must be different. The failure of the US scooter industry partially comes from playing the Chinese game with generic molds. You will not win and you will be competing on price.

If you need the right answer on what to do on the four issues above I have them. I am giving them to you for free. In the next year you will see companies trying to make up for mistakes by changing management. New Chinese companies are already looking at investing but making the same mistakes by putting a nephew or cousin of the factory president in charge.

Companies like CF Moto are ignoring the scooter market and focusing only on more expensive ATVs and bigger UTVs. Instead of parts, warranty, and getting back floorplanning from GE. Then again you will see more private label brands prop up. Znen Motor already set up more private label brands this year. Current Article we just published last week.

Thanks to China Motor Magazine
According to International Dealer News sales in Germany are up, sales in Italy are down year on year.

Also, Chinese sales and exports are down Year on Year and Month on Month.

Our good friend Dave McMullan sent us this report on the state of China.

Chinese Motorcycle Export Declines Y-o-Y & M-o-M Respectively
Chinese Motorcycle Output & Sales Destined to Plunge
The accumulative total output and sales of the Chinese motorcycle industry declined less than 10% for 5 consecutive months due to the influences of the economic growth slowdown of China, the European debt crisis and the worsened inflation of developing countries since the beginning of 2012. Judging from the current situation, it is a foregone conclusion that output and sales of the Chinese motorcycle industry will plunge. The recovery of the industry awaits the adjustment of China's policies and the improvement of overseas situation.

August saw rapid growth of motor-tricycles sales. Only the Sales of 150ml Motorcycles Remain Growing Slightly among the Major Displacement Motorcycles
Among major displacement motorcycles, only the 150ml motorcycles remain a growth of 5.2% since the beginning of 2012, and the rest of them have had various decline. The 125ml motorcycles which occupy the majority of motorcycle output and sales had the most decrease. The total output and sales of 125ml motorcycles between January and August were 5.6361 million units and 5.6878 million units, down 16.80% and 15.87% year-on-year respectively. The production and sales of the 125ml motorcycles in August were 704,700 units and 710,600 units, up 3.46% and 3.77% month-on-month, and down 16.11% and 14.59% year-on-year respectively.
The output and sales of 110ml motorcycles are second to those of 125ml motorcycles. Its total output and sales between January and August were 2.6519 million units and 2.7013 million units, down 9.42% and 9.06% from 2011 respectively. The output and sales of 110ml motorcycles in August were 323,300 units and 338,800 units, output down 1.68% month-on-month and sales up 4.85% month-on-month, down 4.83% and 2.09% year-on-year respectively.
The 150ml motorcycle is the only model that maintains sales growth in 2012 due to the increased economic growth in Western China. The total output and sales of 150ml motorcycles between January and August were 2.7831 million units and 2.8111 million units respectively, up 5.20% and 5.97% year-on-year respectively. The production and sales of 150ml motorcycles in August were 387,800 units and 389,500 units, up 3.09% and 2.58% month-on-month, and up 10.98% and 6.79% year-on-year, showing obvious growth.
The sales performance of 50ml motorcycles was good in the first half of 2012. It's one of the few models that maintained sales growth among major displacement motorcycles in the first half of 2012. However, its output and sales plunged upon entering the second half of 2012. The total output and sales of 50ml motorcycles between January and August were 1.249 million units and 1.2569 million units, down 7.40% and 7.56% from 2011 respectively.
The month-on-month output and sales growth of 50ml motorcycles was great in August. Its output and sales both increased by about 10% respectively, but not as good as those of last year. The output and sales of 50ml motorcycles in August were 143,200 units and 151,600 units, up 7.06% and 10.39% from a month ago, down 21.94% and 18.61% year-on-year respectively.
The sales performance of 250ml motorcycles was not as good as that of last year due to the decline of Chinese motorcycle export in 2012. The total output and sales of 250ml motorcycles between January and August were 451,500 units and 449,100 units, down 7.14% and 7.11% from 2011 respectively, decreasing amplitude worsened a little. The output and sales of 250ml motorcycles in August were 72,300 units and 70,300 units, up 10.49% and 10.57% from a month ago, down 7.21% and 8.11% year-on-year respectively.

Output & Sales of Motor-tricycles Rebounded, Their Accumulative Decreasing Rate Lessened
Motor-tricycles are mostly used as goods transports by farm workers and dwellers of towns and small cities that run business. Due to the economic growth slowdown and soaring commodity prices in the first half of 2012, many consumers suspended or quit their motor-tricycles purchase plans which lead to the gradual decrease of motor-tricycle's output and sales. However, motor-tricycle sales rebounded greatly in August due to the seasonal peak period.
The output and sales of motor-tricycles between January and August were 1.5001 million units and 1.5022 million units, down 1.39% and 0.73% respectively from a year ago, decreasing amplitude shrank by 2 percentage points. As motor-tricycles are mostly used for transporting goods, so their displacements are mostly the 150ml (100ml
We can conclude that motor-tricycle sales rebound in August were mostly driven by the sales increase of 250ml motor-tricycles. This proves that farm workers and low-income group tend to buy vehicles with bigger load. The total sales of the above two displacements motor-tricycles between January and August accounted for 92.20% of the total motor-tricycle output.
The output and sales of motor-tricycles in August were 192,300 units and 193,800 units, up 5.00% and 8.42% month-on-month respectively, and up 14.70% and 11.43% year-on-year respectively. The output and sales of 150cc motor-tricycles were 126,200 units and 126,200 units respectively, up 7.40% and 9.46% month-on-month respectively, and up 9.08% and 9.34% year-on-year respectively. The output and sales of 250cc motor-tricycles were 50,600 units and 51,800 units, up 0.76% and 7.22% from a month ago, and up 20.20% and 7.27% from 2011.

Scooter rentals vs the state of Maryland

Interesting article on dealer news about the state of Maryland.
This is an ongoing issue in several states including Florida.
http://www.dealernews.com/dealernews/article/maryland-scooter-laws-put-squeeze-rentals

It's true adding $700 to the annual operational cost of a rental vehicle could be a lot for a small business. On a fleet of 10 units it would be $7000 a year, but the reality considering how many times the unit is rented you can pass this on to the ride as say an extra $10 fee. I highly doubt a consumer would protest this fee if they knew it protected them.

In Miami most rental shops sell extra insurance so that if the scooter falls, gets hit while parked, or gets stolen if you happen to leave it parked overnight in a shaddy area then you are off the hook. 90% of the time this extra $40 a day is pure profit for the shop and most stores just set the money aside.

So technically the state is really not hurting the store its encouranging the store to do something they should have done anyways. I think most stores just have little if no understanding of vehicle liabilities especially when renting them. It still surprises me how many stores and dealers operate without the proper coverage for their rental operations.

Sometimes an extra expense can be a profit center and keep you from lossing your business.

Suzuki North America Chapter 11

So, I'm in line to vote here in Miami its 5:56am and this just came up across the wire.
http://www.streetinsider.com/Press+Releases/American+%20Suzuki+Motor+Corporation+(%E2%80%9CASMC%E2%80%9D)+Announces+%20Restructuring+and+Realignment+to+Focus+on+MotorcyclesATV+%20and+Marine+Divisions/7846469.html

What this is really about is to bypass state laws for buybacks and to pay dealers lost profits on new units. Think about how much the car dealers are on the hook for because they signed multi year ad contracts or have fleets of new vehicles, the interest they have paid on new units sitting at the dealer, etc...

So in the end don't be surprised if some dealers end up closing or filling for Chapter 11 because of the national decision. Few Suzuki dealers are Suzuki scooter dealers in the USA but it could affect things.

Happy Election 2012

USA Scooter Sales Report October 2012

The Motorcycle Industry Council (MIC for short) just reported it's update 2012 numbers. Since we don't have the Guido Ebert breakdown or the Dealer News Breakdown online anymore I will see if there's anything interestring for our segment.

First - No Chinese mainland companies report to this. It's voluntary, always consider that when looking at ATVs and Scooters.

Second - You pay them fees based on sales and if you are on OEM. So a reporting OEM pays more. So there is an incentive to UNDER REPORT or NOT REPORT.

This months report says that Scooters have seen the biggest jump this year, up 7 percent to 29,389 units. We saw a spike last month due to high gas prices in California.

Dual sport motorcycles followed with a 4.7 percent increase to 23,558 units sold year-to-date.
Off-highway motorcycles were up 0.8 percent to 271,767 units through September.
The off-highway segment was nearly stagnant, only down 43 units or 0.1 percent, to 51,006.
Total motorcycle sales, not including ATVs, were up 1.3 percent.
ATV reported a solid nine-month increase at 3.1 percent over the year-ago period.
(ATVS DO NOT COUNT THE CHINESE UTVS OR ATVS) ATV importers have brought in close to 300,000 units the last few years these are not counted in the MIC numbers. Exports of Chinese ATVs are down, but from what we gather UTVs have doubled in the last three years. Including new 500cc and 700cc Chinese clones - See CF MOTO and others for UTV info.

The MIC has always under reported the true potential of the US market. So its difficult to know exactly where we are without customs reports. Some background. MIC only counts members such as Kymco, Piaggio (Vespa/Aprilia/Piaggi), Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki, and BMW now are the only reporting companeis. So no Genuine (PGO Taiwan Private label and LML India Private Label), No SYM / Sang Yang (Lance now Alliance powersports formerly Carter, MRP, others ), no CPI, TGB, you get the picture. Even big volume everything goes at the fleamarket guys like Roketa and SunL are not in this despite selling 20,000 or more pieces a year. So its extremely one-sided. The last Piaggio shareholder report claimed they owned 25% of the US market and were the number one brand. Well yes there should be a disclaimer there. It's like looking at a map and saying Australia is the largest country in the world and not counting the rest of the continents. You get the picture.

No word yet how Hurricane Sandy will affect things.

Hurricane Sandy MRP Effort

Hurricane Sandy MRP Effort

We started this weekend hearing from a lot of people waiting to get scooter and moped parts. We had no sales to area last week and over the weekend its been a torrent of voicemails and emails. Despite the cold apparently some clients are all freaked out about a gas shortage. From what I see in the news there is "NO GAS SHORTAGE" so this is all a media thing.
In the meantime some consumers have ran to repair shops and stores with older Vespa's, mopeds, and Chinese scooters that have been in storage or need a carburetor to get it back on the road. We are doing our best to meet the demand since many do not have access to the internet or the repair manuals so we have to see if we can find the parts over the phone.

We are here to help.

We are extending free shipping, we will help you on the phone, and there are NO MINIMUMS for the affected area. So if all you need is a $2 part, we will get this out to you. No questions asked. We just want to help the stores and consumers affected up north. To those of you running to the local shop, be patient, many of them had no electricity and might still not have internet, some cannot take credit cards, but you can call our 1800 number and we will help send the parts for your moped, scooter, or chinese bike.

We cannot guarantee delivery time or method. Some shipping routes are taking longer on FedEx and UPS, also US mail will not be in some affected areas. The unique thing is that these areas had a lot of scooters due to the proximity to the coast so I understand this is a great way to get around ( 80 miles to the gallon on some units ) but we will do everything we can to help out.

This week we continue our 50% off select accessories, 50% off jackets, and even if you're not a dealer we will help you find the parts or sell them to you to help get people to and from work. To everyone in the affected areas we hope the recovery effort continues.

To our Dealers Jim and Nolan we wish you guys a speedy recovery. To all our customers from Maryland all the way to New York we hear you. Thankfully a scooter is the best way to get around and you wont have to wait 4 hours for gasoline. From what we see on the news this should be a temporary thing, but we promise to help you get back to scootering as soon as possible.
