Scooter Sales still up for 2011

The Motorcycle Industry Council is saying scooter sales are still up for the second quarter for 2011. Nowhere near the numbers of 2007 - 2008 and as I've reported before nowhere near reality because of the mainland importers who are 50% or more of US sales like Jonway, SUNL, Roketa who don't report.

Still this is a good step in the right direction. Many retailers are still struggling, but at least now there is hope after 12 quarters of a shriking dealer base more scooter stores are opening. Some companies that pulled out of the US market are also looking at coming back.....

If it continues 2012 could be the year the scooter industry makes a comeback.....

Italian Motorcycle Industry Solution to Decline Allow China to Sell High End Motorcycles

So, I know everyone thinks the solution to their problems is selling in Asia. Vespa recently opened a high end showroom in Taiwan again, they are expanding production in Vietnam and it's true most of the growth is in the third world or Asia. The economy in Brazil is booming and their need for motorcycles has doubled, but this latest move by MV left me scratching my head.

Over at Dealer News I just saw an article with this quote:
“Distributing the MV models through a prestigious society like Lifan ensures that we will enter into this very important market with a very strong commercial partner at our side, respecting the Chinese culture, mentality and laws,” said Umberto Uccelli, commercial director of MV Agusta.
http://www.dealernews.com/dealernews/LATEST+NEWS/Lifan-to-distribute-MV-Agusta-motorcycles-in-China/ArticleStandard/Article/detail/730523?contextCategoryId=48447

Here at MRP we happen to have a ton of Lifan product, parts made by Lifan for several different US importers that have now closed. Lifan scooters, motorcycles they are all based on someone elses design. In the end expanding into China is just setting yourself up to have to share tech and designs like it or now. I also don't think the roads in China are meant for an MV. If you ever drive outside of a main city there's really nowhere to ride a $30,000 motorcycle at any speed about 20 mph without possibly killing yourself. So most of these units will end up in someone's basement or apartment garage. Yes, there are more rich people in China, but is it sustainable for all the Italian firms on betting their futures on China to buy Ferrari and Ducati's. There is no guarantee that the rising middle class there will embrace luxury brands, there could very well be a backlash against the middle class as it rises it up - There's a great article on this in this months Economist magazine.

I just see the trend and instead of focusing on making better products, being more competitive, more companies end up like Benelli or now like Malaguti, giving away all the house secrets to China instead of becoming more competitive.

Don't be surprised if you see a Lifan motorcycle in a few months that looks a lot like an MV Augusta.

Finding Parts for FlyScooters, SYM, Adly, Daelim and CPI Scooters.

Some updates on how to find parts for brands that have left or come back to the market.

Many riders are just waking up, dusting off the scooter and realizing that the dealer that used to carry brands like Adly and CPI no longer has them and instead only has some Chinese Znen models. Sometimes they call and the dealer isn't there, worse they call and Daelim USA is gone, CPI USA is gone, ADLY USA is gone, SYM Carter is no longer there you get the picture...

To help you we have some updates:

CPI - New importer is www.PITMOTORSLTD.com and they have plenty of parts. If they don't have it we have it. Call them first. Great guys and they work with MRP we know what units they are importing. Call them for all your CPI needs. They also have some TNG scooters and some TNG parts.

TNG - We are still adding TNG parts, now we are adding pictures. Call your local MRP dealer for TNG parts or visit one of our dealer run websites. http://www.scootertronics.com drop ships a lot of TNG parts.

ADLY - We are adding more ADLY parts for ATVs and Scooters than anyone in the USA to our MRP website as we write this.

DAELIM - The Korean brand closed. Get the part number from the internet, have your local dealer call us with the part number. We are only stocking engine parts.

FLyScooters - Many of the same brands as Diamo / TNG we have all the parts for the units here at MRP.

New 2011 TGB Bullet R50X looks amazing....too bad its not in America

The new TGB lineup from Taiwan is selling like wildfire in France and Germany. Too bad its not in the USA.

There is still no word on when the brand will come back. Maybe next time they should look at Kymco USA and do things with the direct approach?

Malaguti Moto in Italy to Close Factory. Parts Company to Remain Open.

We'll it's all over the internet so might as well. The Malaguti factory is closing.

Malaguti Moto in Italy has kicked the bucket. The family behind the company is offering the remaining employees 30,000 Euros a piece to retire and leave. The parts company will remain open and there is word that possibly new bikes will come but they will be 100% made in China.

The Italian press is reporting that Giuliana Righi FIOM / CGIL Bologna - there were three contacts for the possible sale of the company ( all provided to the Italian Govt by Joel Martin of MRP )
http://www.telesanterno.com/malaguti-castel-san-pietro-chiusura-0701.html

The only good news is that 28 employees remain and the US and other markets can continue to buy parts from Malaguti Recambi. The bad news is if any new Malaguti's emerge they will likely be made in China. So much for Forza Italia.

The articles in Italy fail to mention that the govt waited for months to reply to the offers, couldn't offer incentives like relocation cash, how much exactly were the investors going to get in co-op. In all honesty I feel Italy has become a nation of espresso drinkers and waiters. Their leaders are useless and if anything Silvio has thought be that you get more press with Bunga Bunga parties than trying to save your manufacturing base.

I think the Malaguti family is tired of the battle. I met Learco Malaguti before I even graduated college and I believed in the Italian product, in the family trade, and I felt a passion for all things Italian. It was a dream that could not withstand globalization and the gradual destruction of the Italian Motorcycle Industry. His two sons didn't have the same passion he did. He built up the company, survived the Nazi invasion, rebuilt, and eventually took advantage of a moped boom that led the company to greatness. Malaguti lasted over ninety years. Getting rid of all the employees make it easier to re-launch like Italjet, Garelli, and Benelli with Chinese assembly of the scooters. Another re-badge job on a CF MOTO, Zongshen, Jialing, or ZNEN bike like everyone else.

It won't be the same. It's kind of like when you look at a new Aprilia and you check and it says made In China, its just not the same to me. A Ferrari made anywhere other than Emilia-Romagna wouldn't be the same to me. Some brands weren't meant to be globalized.

To me this was one of them, but then again the average consumer doesn't care as long as the label on the outside says Nike ( do they really care if it was made by a nine year old in Thailand or someone being paid a fair wage in the USA ) that's the real issue at the end of the day. There will never be good high paying Jobs in Casa di San Pietro "jobs for life" like they used to have back in the Golden days of Malaguti. It's a shame but it was bound to happen.

BMW Press release on new EV C1 Scooter

So I just checked my mail and finally some goods news on the C1 concept scooter and what the plans are. I've posted a few videos from BMW in the past, but this shows they are getting ready for a North American launch sometime in the future.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jMQSewt6U7k

Most Americans see nothing but 50cc Chinese scooters on the road and those that are Pop-Culture or Media savvy think everything is a Vespa, but the truth is it will take a luxury brand like BMW to put Maxi Scooters in the status symbol mindset. Nobody really gets impressed when you drive a LT or LX 150, maybe an MP3 , Silverwing, or a T-Max because of the price range. The BMW could change all that and it could change the way dealerships work since now dealers especially the big Japanese dealers will have some competition for the Maxi Scooter client from the European dealer. That means more ads, more awareness, and more sales.

From BMW today:

BMW Motorrad Concept Vehicle BMW E-Scooter.
Innovative development study with elevtric drive.

Space is becoming increasingly scarce in the major conurbation centres and traffic density is growing continuously. Political and social conditions are changing. All these factors coalesce in increasing demands in terms of
private transportation. The concept vehicle BMW E-Scooter with electric drive provides an innovative look at changing urban mobility needs.
While the currently available, purely electrically-powered scooters have been almost exclusively used inside towns and cities to date due to their performance and range, which makes them suitable for short distances only, the concept vehicle BMW E-Scooter offers a much broader spectrum of use.

High range and excellent performance figures.
Since it was conceived as a future-oriented vehicle for commuting between urban areas and the city centre, therefore attracting funding from the German Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Development, there were two main requirements for its development: dynamic figures comparable to those of a maxi scooter with a combustion engine and a high range in realistic conditions of use.
The concept vehicle BMW E-Scooter provides the necessary sustained  output and maximum speed for safe and reliable overtaking on urban motorways and also when carrying two people. It is also easily capable of managing hill starts on steep slopes with a pillion passenger.
The development study also has the necessary maximum output to be able to achieve acceleration figures within the important 0 - 60 km/h range, which are at the level of current maxi scooters powered by a 600 cc combustion engine.
The high storage capacity of the battery allows a daily driving range of over 100 kilometres. In this way, the BMW E-Scooter concept vehicle provides a long-term, zero-emissions urban and suburban travel option which is suitable for everyday use.

Fast charging at conventional power sockets.
The E-Scooter concept vehicle's battery is charged at regular household power sockets as found in Europe, the USA, Canada and Japan, so no special charging station is required. When the battery is completely flat, the charging period is less than three hours. However, practical experience has shown that the battery rarely runs out completely, so charging times are  generally shorter.

Frame.
Unlike existing maxi scooters with combustion engines, the concept vehicle does not have a main frame. Instead, the aluminium battery casing — which also contains the electronic system required for battery cell monitoring —takes over the function of the frame. The steering head support is connected to it, as is the rear frame and the left-hand mounted single swing arm with directly hinged, horizontally installed shock absorber.

Electric machine, power electronics and charging device.
Due to its high output, the BMW Motorrad development study has no hub motor with direct drive or planetary gearbox. Instead, the high-performance electric machine is mounted behind the battery casing. The secondary drive consists of a toothed belt from the electric machine to the belt pulley mounted coaxially on the swinging fork pivot with drive pinion. From here, power transmission occurs via roller chain to the rear wheel. When the E-Scooter is decelerated in trailing throttle or when braking, the energy released is recuperated, thereby increasing the vehicle's range by between 10 and 20 per cent depending on driving profile.
The electrical components required for the electric drive are installed on the top of the battery casing. The external battery electronics system permanently collects and monitors data such as the temperature and voltage of the battery cells, both during travel and while charging. The power electronics acts as a control system and controls the electric machine. The charging device includes a charge cable which allows the battery to be recharged at a conventional household power socket. In addition to the other components like an ISO insulation monitor, high-voltage indicator and a high-voltage distributor, a DC-DC converter is included. It is required to change high voltage to low voltage power to supply the 12 volt vehicle supply and especially for the control units.

Cooling system.
During travel, the electric machine and power electronics are liquid-cooled, as is the charging device during charging. An electric coolant pump ensures coolant circulation through the radiator. While a coolant is commonly used for the battery in electrically powered cars, the E-Scooter concept vehicle uses an air cooling system in order to save space.

Safety.
BMW Motorrad is one of the very few motorcycle manufacturers to be able to draw on its own experience and expertise in the automobile field in the development of electrically powered vehicles. Synergies are derived from the development of the BMW E-Scooter concept vehicle not just in the ready availability of technical components but also in the area of high voltage engineering and the associated safety requirements. Here for the first time, standards established by the leading automobile manufacturers relating to high voltage safety (> 60 volt) and functional reliability are being applied to a two-wheel vehicle with electric drive.
