A few more days until Ride to Work Day
I already posted this a few months back and again last month, but just a quick note that June 20th is this year's annual "Ride to Work Day" support the scene, take some pictures, some videos and get the word out.
http://www.ridetowork.org/
To find out more visit their site http://www.ridetowork.org/ in the meantime grab your scooter and let people know about June 20th.
It's right after Amerivespa so scooters and bikes should be all the news in a few days.

A movie we can all support
For Months everyone in California has been talking about this movie. Tom Hanks has a few scooters and in the movie he comes out riding an old 80s Yamaha which is pretty cool.
Pretty much anyone who owns a scooter in or near LA worked as an extra on this movie so you can see everything in certain scenes from Honda's, Kymcos, Genuines all make cameos in the movie. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uS155D2HlwY&feature=player_embedded
If anything I think everyone in the business should rally around this movie and help promote it. If it turns out to be a hit the movie could help push more mainstream news, stories, and will be a cult classic for years to come. Worse case scenario if the movie is terrible to watch at least you have Tom Hanks in it and he's an awesome guy.

Will Best Buy Care to Service EVs, even after the Electric Scooter Failure? WHY YES!
Now we all know what a flop the Best Buy entry into EVs was. All you have to do is Google it. Despite some creative gimmicks by Crispin Porter and whole bunch of Crispin interns Brammo has burned a lot of cash and sold a few more bikes than ZERO ( which currently has as many units out there as its name )
So where are the real EV scooter sales? From what I have seen they are all in the under $4,000 category which is the reason the new ETON EV is a hit and a reason why companies like Current Motor and even Vectrix are going to the under $3999 crowd.
I think Best Buy would be the best place in the country to shop for EV units, but they can't just put a little corner and expect the units to sell themselves unless gas is at $5 which is what the upper management probably thought when they came up with this brilliant idea while drinking at the Golf course bar with the Brammo guys. Seriously, you have to put more effort than that. Testing areas, demos, explanations and you probably have to get licensed to sell Motorcycles in all the different states if you're going to do this the right way.
I recently saw the people from Walmart looking at getting in on EVs and scooters. Every couple of years I see the SAM's people walking the shows at EICMA or INTERMOT and here I was seeing them visiting factories again. The thing is in Europe they already sell Scooters at the Supermarket so why not in the USA at some point? Best Buy and Walmart both have the money to lobby each states DMV to change the laws. So technically if they want the market they can afford to build it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xsaR7Vlnpik
So if its easy anyone can do it. It's sad to see the Best Buy track record in this because when they announced back in May that they were shutting down the EV program it was just after announcing they would be pushing harder into it. So it left a few of us watchers confused. The Brammo thing made sense only if they added several brands, EV bikes, and had a whole section. I mean a little corner wasn't going to do it. There are many educational barriers, marketing barriers, so it just became one of those lazy corporate things because I think Best Buy failed to put any effort into it. Looked very "green" like a comment you make at a hippie party "I like to recycle as well," but there was no real effort behind it.
If Best Buy or Walmart really want to influence the market here are the Scooter Mavens suggestions:
1. Put car and EV Bike charging stations in every single store. Not a few green areas like Portland where you feel you need to impress the locals so they don't Unionize, not everywhere.
2. Start selling EV bikes at every location. No dealers license, no crazy insurance schemes, sell some ULTRA bikes or something cool like that. Also, be really smug about it so that people run there. Make it look really clean like the Apple section.
3. End all customer confusion about the charging process by giving away free videos, have a large TV screen showing how easy it is to charge your EV Scooter or bike. Walmart sells vehicles in other countries including China so why not here? Think about it, make EV stations a requirement for all stores including the new Walmart Express. I can see it now "Charge your scooter in 30mins while you get your pain killers at 30% less than your local CVS!" Actually, next to the Mc Donald's express and the Korean Nail salon inside the mega Walmart you might have to go high end in certain markets like California in my opinion a Dr Tatt Off http://www.drtattoff.com/ would be a good idea as well. So you can charge your bike, get your pain killers, eat a burger, and have that wart removed all in 30 mins.
4. Once you get your feet wet, find some under $4,000 vehicles, get some dealers licenses and start selling EV bikes and Motorcycles. Make some trikes for the old retirees in Florida. Put the force of your media machines behind this. Make a sporty version for all the DUI drivers in North Carolina and you will have yourself a hit. Call up Current Motor, Vectrix, any of them will gladly help you on this. Worse case scenario import your own brand. Make the Justin Beiber and Lady Gaga edition and you will be the KINGS OF ELECTRIC VEHICLES IN NORTH AMERICA. You will have half a China offering you their wares in a few weeks from the only industries you currently don't buy from.

You will have half a China offering you their wares in a few weeks from the only industries you currently don't buy from.
No double dip recession for Motorcycle Sales! Scooters are back up!
No double-dip recession for motorcycle sales:
MIC Q1 sales numbers for motorcycles are up 17.5% and scooter sales are up 47%... of course we know that the MIC scooter numbers are tainted. ahemm I mean they only have a few people who report so they don't count any of the Taiwanese brands like PGO (Genuine) or Kymco. Plus none of the Chinese brands so companies like Jonway which really dominate US sales thanks to all their private label buyers like Roketa, SUNL sorry I mean Massimo now and Redstreak don't appear anywhere.
A better real world indicator of motorcycle/scooter usage would be replacement tire sales. The good news is that tire sales are also up through March of 2011. Total tire sales are up 29.4% for all two-wheeled segments (nearly 1 million tires sold Jan-March 2011). Scooter tire sales were up 48.6% in the same time period. We still have a long way to go before the powersports industry reaches full recovery, but it looks like we have bottomed out and are finally beginning the bounce-back phase.
Now if the MIC could stop with the Rev your ride idea and do something that actually helps scooter riders like provide scooters for all the Motorcycle Class instructors that would help out a lot more than giving away prizes to people who were buying exhausts anyways in stores that are already in the business. Just ask Josh Rogers over at Scoot! Magazine how he feels about this and what he thinks about the new MIC numbers.
If you haven't yet make sure to sign up at the new Scoot! Forum. I've been checking it out and they have some really hot scooter pictures, babes on scooters, Honda Zoomers / Ruckus, and much more including a whole vintage section. So scooter sales are up, we don't know how many, MIC is doing some great press releases, and people are visiting the new Scoot! Should be an interesting Amerivespa this year.

Bloodletting at a major scooter distributor
Bloodletting (or blood-letting) is the withdrawal of often considerable quantities of blood from a patient to cure or prevent illness and disease. Sounds like the Scooter Industry has had a lot of this lately in North America.
We are not immune to what happens on Wall Street or to the opportunists who come in thanks to high gas prices and prey on people who work for passion and not a paycheck.
From time to time new owners or investors come into companies and let go of the people that helped start the place. Today I got a call from someone I truly respected despite being competitors who told me his "New" bosses were revamping one of the most loved brands out there, that the former manager and owners who were known for their flamboyant "Peacocking" in the industry were now owners / managers in name only. Not that any dealers or anyone else cares for that matter since they'll continue to buy from them, but its a sad situation to see all the staff running for the nearby guys. I've commented before how some of the brightest and best in the business get burned out.
Same guy I'm referring to went out and purchased a nice mansion, a new car, and some expensive gifts for his kids while cutting employee salaries and bonuses the last two years.
It pains me to hear these stories. I love riding scooters, I love seeing growth in the industry, but when you see growth at the expense of the best kids out there it just makes me sad.
Don't expect to read about this in the trades. None of them will report on this because it could cost them an advertiser.
