More Bad News from Baja Motorsports
In cooperation with the Consumer Product Safety Commission, Phoenix-based Baja Motorsports is recalling about 308,000 minibikes and go-karts. Consumers should stop using the units unless otherwise instructed, the government says.
According to the CPSC, the gas caps on these units can leak or detach from the fuel tanks, posing a fire hazard. In addition, the throttles can stick due to an improperly positioned fuel line and throttle cable, posing a sudden acceleration hazard.
Baja Motorsports has received at least nine reports of the gas caps leaking and detaching, including one report of a serious burn injury to a child. The firm has also received 25 reports of stuck throttles possibly due to the fuel line and throttle cable being improperly attached, with injuries to the face and other parts of the body reported.
The units, made in China, were sold by various retailers nationwide from November 2004 through June 2010 for between $200 and $2,000. They were also sold on the following websites: Costco.com, Amazon.com, Toysrus.com, Northerntool.com, Sears.com and Kmart.com.
The recall involves minibikes with model numbers beginning with HT65, MB165, WR65, MB196, DB30, WR90 and DR90. It involves go-karts with model numbers BB65, SD65, DN65 and RT65. The model number is located on the minibikes’ fenders and/or fuel tank and on the go-karts’ roll cage. They both have black plastic gas caps.
The government is instructing owners to contact Baja Mototosports (www.bajamotorsports.net) for a free replacement gas cap and to schedule a free repair of the fuel line and throttle cable. The company can be contacted at 888-863-2252 between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. Eastern Time, Monday through Friday.

This oil spill has gone on long enough!
This was on the Scooter Scoop today. Steve is right on the money we need to spread the word and tell everyone to kick BP to the curve, its the worst run company in the history of mankind since Germany in WW2. The people in charge of BP are idiots, they should be brought up on criminal charges.
Ban BP from doing business in the US. BAN BP.
Addressing the Powersports Problems of 2010
Addressing the industry problems of 2010
- I have gotten a flood of emails the last few days from dealers with issues with distributors, co-ops not being paid, distributors not paying for returned bikes, warranty lawsuits, lemon laws being broken, I can’t comment on half these problems, but what I will say is we will help you the dealership any way we can.
The best analogy I can give is when the building is on fire some people run and there are others that run inside to put out the flames. My video comment on this situation: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WuvpntSagEE
I want our dealers to know that even if we're not United Motors, Tank, Roketa or any of the companies responsible for the issues they are having we are still here to help to the best of our abilities. I field at least two to three calls a week from dealers or consumers wanting a warranty paid on a United Motors scooters. We have nothing to do with this unfortunately in states with strict lemon laws the dealers if not able to find parts or repair the unit like in Arizona are forced to give the consumer a new vehicle or their money back. 2009 saw so many distributors and dealers close that this problem has become a daily occurrence in our field of work for on-road vehicles. We strive to help the dealers out and get those riders back on the road and to help you The Dealer avoid any issues of this nature that might arise because a distributor left the marketplace.
I have watched this year as some companies have done everything possible to avoid any responsibility and not only sunk some of their dealers, but helped make the situation worse by selling retail or opening online stores for parts. Some discounted bikes after selling them at full cost to dealers. I'm human like everyone else so you see two types of players out there the guys running away and the guys running into the fire to help dealers, to expand, to grow and to make the most of the situation. So at the end of the day you can say why would you want to count a pile of United Motors parts? and if for no other reason you do it because that's what the market needs.
I have also commented and complimented industry leaders who have in a way thought me the proper way to do things. CF-MOTO USA has done an amazing job of looking for alternative ways to help their dealer network. I think people are overly critical without knowing the challenges a new upstart faces especially in a market where store credit lines and GE lines are continuously being cut. So this company has done the impossible and actually expanded the line in a downmarket. The fact that they keep sending out trucks, doing events, helping dealers with open houses makes it a brand that is still pushing. That's what dealers need in this market when others are retreating Lev, Kevin, Ivan, and everyone at CF MOTO USA keep pushing and dealers need to be aware of that.
I actually have to complement Erica Price for the suggestion last month of helping buy back older clothing from stocking dealers to help them stay profitable. We started this for stocking Armadillo dealers and I have to say they have been happy and many of them retail both Armadillo and Corazzo at the same time – one line working hand in hand with the other. Part of the reason is because of ideas like hers. Everyone at Kymco
Life isn’t a smooth ride, it’s meant to be a rollercoaster and I have seen this all before. I have literally watched half a dealer network get wiped out after the tragedy of September 11, 2001. I have also seen the market surge with an influx of fly-by-night profit seekers during the boom of 2007. So this business goes in cycles. I might not have been around the moped explosion back in the 70s, but I will say history tens to repeat itself so we are due for an increase in sales thanks to oil. – Look at the Lloyds of London report from yesterday on the fact that gas prices and insurance companies are hedging themselves for the next oil surge. So hang in there sales are coming.
Regarding recent tragic events in the business we will do everything possible to find the cross compatibility for SYM and Carter parts. I have no doubt the company will come back stronger than ever in 2011. SYM is the second largest maker of scooters in

MRP sells Variators for all makes and models
Parts for SYM

In the meantime this is the premier brand of Gokarts in America I would go as far to say as the high end of the spectrum being of better fit and finish than the other brands on the market. So the owners are likely to want to repair them and they will wait for parts. In the meantime we do have accessories and aftermarket parts available for the Carter dealers and consumers looking to buy parts.
Tires, Exhausts, rollers, belts, pistons, rings, CVT systems and more are in stock for the Carter 150cc, 250cc, 300cc lineup.
To read more on the fire at Carter SYM read it on Guidos blog
http://blog.guidoebert.com/2010/07/12/cartersym-warehouse-burns-to-total-loss.aspx
I'm actually kind of taken back by the whole thing. If you've seen my videos most dealers would know we were the original US importer for SYM back in 2003-2004 when imported the original DD50 and Jet Euro's to the US market. So to see this happen upsets me since I know what a great brand it is ( in Taiwan it is number 3 in production, but number 2 in Taiwanese brands it's KYMCO then SYM ) the company is a bigger company since it is also Hyundai of Taiwan. It dwarfs the competition being 10 times the size of Eton Group or PGO which are now both parts of car part conglomerates. So I have no doubt it will be back it's just a question of when.

TOP TEN VIDEOS HOW TO KEEP YOUR SCOOTER STORE IN BUSINESS
Not a week goes by where I don't get an email from a shop that is doing terrible, nine times out of ten it's because the store owner focused on new unit sales and not on service and parts. The second most common reason is poor presentation.
A scooter store is an experience. America is not China or Taiwan, 70% of buyers don't use it as the primary form of transportation unless they live on South Beach, Florida or Key West. Most people use it for fun that means a ride to the grocery store, inside a closed community, a vacation home, or at the race track. Less than 20% of riders in the USA use it for work, 5% its just a toy that sits in the garage and to the other 5% its an addition to the mobile motohome. If you don't know your market in a down market you will close. If you don't repair every brand regardless of origin you will find yourself working out of your house shortly. So take my advice I visit 100 stores a year.
REPAIR ALL BRANDS, advertise that you repair all brands, and don't be the snotty store that says we only work on Vespa or Taiwanese brands we deem worthy of our mechanics. I used to think this way and I was the first person to change back in 2005 and tell the dealers wake up guys you have to repair all the brands. So these videos here are both for the new shops and the old shops. The old man set in his ways and the new guy saying hey all the shops in town closed I want to open one because there is money to be made. MRP can help you, so watch and learn.
Create the experience, Select a few key brands and sell them right ( dont flood the showroom with crap) tell everyone you will work on any brand, stick to your guns and charge what you need to charge to stay in business, and you will. CARRY ACCESSORIES LIKE MRP. I get thank you emails as well from people who made the change and so can you.
