Everyday someone asks me on the phone when will the next scooter boom happen in the USA?
My answers is always when gas is above $5 ( as it should be )
Seriously, we can't keep invading every country in the world for oil nor sacrificing our young to roadside bombs in Iraq. I was in ROTC in college and had I not started a business I would have most likely have wasted time looking for Osama in caves while he was hiding in Pakistan. Scooters like any industry are affected by what goes on in the world.
I might sell OEM Keeway China parts, but I am fully aware of the dealings of the OEM in CHINA. One of them is they just opened a huge factory in partnership with a dictator. As a small business in America I find it to be quite offensive. I have shifted our buying to other sources in response, but since I am limited in what I can do I have decided just to point out the madness of the whole situation.
The $5 gas idea might not be so far fetched given that Iran might get its ass whooped pretty soon and Chavez is making some clear policy mistakes in America's backyard. He's signing partnerships with Chinese scooter companies ( same one I used to buy from ) while at the same time his family stands for everything he goes on TV to speak out against.
Seriously, as any smart person in Miami will tell you half the local population is praying for the day Fidel Castro dies for the party to end all parties in the streets of downtown. Until then we can sustain ourselves with the daily rumors that Chavez is bloated with Cancer. This one was no rumor, his own daughter finally pointed out what everyone knew this week.
Leave it to a teenager to flaunt her Ipad, MP3 player, or frequent trips she might actually help make the country democratic. Most of the poor in the country are uneducated and will blindly follow anyone who promises handouts (Communism does work as a concept, but impractical and impossible sort of like an ice cream cone that never melts.) As to scooters has anyone ever seen a Communist clone of a Vespa? They never worked. How many Red Scooters actually are still on the road in Moscow? Vyatka Industrial Plant created the Vyatka scooter and Venezuela is on the same path now making RED Keeway scooters. As the government promised "A scooter for every Venezuelan," Reminds me of Hitler promising a Beetle for every German.
Only the Chinese have made better scooters because they are even more corporate and capitalistic than Americans are right now. Unlike Chavez who clings to old school Communism which clearly does not work.
Let's face it no young person has ever wanted to live in Communism unless they were masochists. So to see the daughter of the president of Venezuela flaunting dollars online might actually get most Venezuelans to stop drinking the daily Polar beer and get up and strike. No revolution was ever won by sitting at home complaining. The only reality that ever brought change in this world is violence and brute force. Few regimes have ever fallen from protests or letter writing campaigns.
Venezuelans are slowly becoming just like Cubans, Syrians, and anyone else under a severe dictatorship. They get used to living in the Ghetto. You are so busy waiting in line, looking for cooking oil, that you have no time to plan how to change the country or get rid of your oppressors. In Venezuela now they ration food. Just like in Cuba. Twelve years ago it was a net food exporter, now it imports a third of its food. Who does this remind you of? While the president goes on TV calling America all sorts of names, he keeps the population busy by keeping them hungry.
Will gas prices go up? Yes they will. Will it affect Americans? Most certainly.
America won't get involved, but it will be interesting to see if anyone (even the least educated Venezuelan) will stand up to this hypocrisy they live in. Even the blind cannot ignore that while they wait in lines for cooking oil the well connected have Ipads. While Chavez blames America his own family has pictures of Justin Bieber on the wall.
Venezuela recently opened the largest QJ - Keeway assembly plan in South America. This is a country that in the 1970s had daily flights of the Concord from Paris direct to Caracas. Rolls Royce had a dealership in Downtown Venezuela.
Now Venezuelans can only aspire to a brand new GY6 and to pray they dont get mugged on the corner.
Maybe its time they wake up. I don't care about $5 gas in America if it means democracy is reborn in Venezuela. I don't care if we have $5 gas if it means the people of Syria are not killed and oppressed in their streets. I for one would pay $5 for gas if I knew women in Iran could drive and weren't killed or that Israel didn't have to go to sleep at night worrying that Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was in power wanting to wipe them out. Get rid of all these idiots and let gas be $5.
The Hypocrisy of Chavez and his family is clear to all Venezuelans now. The same is true of Castro, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Bashar al-Assad, Ghadafi (now dead), and everyone else who oppresses in the name of power. They will go down in history as dictators, people who killed their own people, and there is a special corner in Hell for them sitting next to Stalin, Hittler, and Hussein. All men who rose to power and brought about human suffering.
